An electrical panel sets how much power a building can use at once. Adding an EV charger, a heat pump, an induction range or an addition can push an older panel past what it was sized for.
We start by working out whether you need an upgrade at all. Sometimes the existing panel has room, or load management can avoid a bigger service. When an upgrade is the right answer, we quote it in writing and handle the permit, the utility and the inspection.
What a panel upgrade covers
Load calculation
We add up what the building uses today and what you plan to add, so the new panel is sized for everything you plan to add, not just the next appliance.
Panel replacement
A new panel and breakers for panels that are full, damaged, overheating or no longer have replacement parts available.
Service upgrades
A larger service from the utility when the house or building needs more amperage, coordinated with the utility for the disconnect and reconnect.
Subpanels
A second panel for a garage, shop, addition or ADU when the main panel is out of space.
Permit and inspection
We pull the permit and schedule the inspection, and the utility restores power once the work passes.
Signs it is worth a look
Breakers that trip often, a panel that is warm to the touch, scorch marks or a burning smell, no free breaker spaces, or plans to add a large load such as an EV charger or heat pump. If you notice heat, scorching or a smell, call before using the circuit again.

The same process applies to a commercial service. For restaurants and shops we plan the shutdown around your hours and discuss it with you before it happens, including three-phase and 208V services.

Panel upgrades: questions
Do I need a panel upgrade to add an EV charger?
Not always. We check your panel capacity first. Many homes can add a Level 2 charger on the existing panel, sometimes with a smaller charger setting or load management. We only recommend an upgrade when the numbers call for one.
Does a panel upgrade need a permit?
Yes. Replacing a panel or upgrading a service needs an electrical permit and inspection in Washington. We pull the permit, coordinate with the utility and schedule the inspection.
Will my power be off during the upgrade?
Yes, for part of the job. We tell you in advance how long the power will be off, and for businesses we plan the shutdown around your operating hours. Early and late work is available by arrangement.
